Kimmeridge is one of the most challenging parts of the coastline for collecting. It is SERIOUSLY NOT RECOMMENDED FOR FAMILIES, PARTIES or during winter/spring months. Kimmeridge is in one of the most remote parts of the Dorset coast and is very difficult to access. There are two methods of access, one is to park at Kimmeridge bay and walk East, and the other is to park at Chapmans Pool and walk West. Both are a vast distance apart. It is possible to walk the full length from Kimmeridge Bay to Chapmans Pool, but this gives little time for collecting. There is sometimes access at Rope Lake Head, via a rope, but this is not always present and is equally dangerous. This guide therefore concentrates on Kimmeridge Bay itself, although the coastline from Kimmeridge to Chapmans Pool is much more productive.

FOSSIL CODE OF CONDUCT

This section of the Kimmeridge Dorset Coast is part of the Dorset and East Devon World Heritage Site. Fossil collecting is allowed on this part of the Heritage Site but you are asked to follow the Fossil Collecting Code of Conduct for the Kimmeridge Dorset Coast which has been adopted by landowners and local professional fossil collectors alike. This code forms part of the management plan for the site and detailed information can be found on the Jurassiccoast.com website. Please collect responsibly.
